Last month, OpenAI introduced “Dots”—personal AI agents designed to assist with cross-project collaboration and task completion. Previously, users could access their Dots via ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. Now, OpenAI has added a new feature that allows users to interact with their AI agents through mobile messaging apps. Dots can send updates, photos, and voice messages, while also retaining the context of past conversations. This feature is currently available in preview for eligible ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States.
OpenAI Dots Gains Support for iMessage and RCS Messaging
On Wednesday, OpenAI announced on X (formerly Twitter) that its “Dot” AI agents have been integrated into popular messaging platforms. With this latest update, users can now message their Dot directly via iMessage on iPhone or the RCS messaging service on Android.
In addition to text, the Dot agent can also accept photos and voice memos. OpenAI states that users can assign a task—such as identifying items on a dinner plate or tracking specific matters that require attention—by providing input in the form of text, photos, or even voice memos. Dot will then send relevant updates to the user via text message.
OpenAI’s Dot remembers past interactions, allowing users to switch between ChatGPT and the messaging apps on their phones without needing to repeat previous instructions.
This new messaging feature is currently being rolled out in the United States as a preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. Eligible users can enable the feature by opening Dot’s profile and selecting the “Text Message” option. OpenAI has not yet announced when this feature will be available in other regions or to users on different subscription tiers.
OpenAI has also addressed potential privacy concerns regarding the integration of AI agents into messaging services, stating that “only you can send messages to your virtual agent, and your virtual agent can only send messages to you.”
As previously mentioned, OpenAI launched Dots last month. It runs on GPT-6 Astra, and its agents can connect to over 4,000 applications through OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem.
